Much-hyped Vietnamese kids film to seek distribution at Cannes

The film, based on an award winning and best-selling novel by Nguyen Nhat Anh, is director Victor Vu’s 11th feature.

Set in the mid 1980s in a poor countryside village of central Vietnam, the film is a nostalgic story of two young brothers who share everything but also compete with each other while vying for the attention and affection of a young girl.

"There is a whole new wave of cinema emanating from Vietnam that captures the energy, dynamism, introspective story-telling, and cinematic/technical sophistication of that society which is in transition," said chairman Michael Werner of Fortissimo, the sales agent of the movie. 

"Victor encapsulates all of those trends and with this project he is working to create a film which will surely capture the hearts and minds of cinema-goers around the globe," said Werner said.

The much-hyped film is still in production, with a major holiday release scheduled at the end of the year. It is produced by Galaxy Media & Entertainment. 

Vu, a Vietnamese-American, is considered one of Vietnam’s top filmmakers. His previous movies, including Vengeful Heart, Battle of Brides, were all major box-office hits in Vietnam.
