A festival featuring a variety of traditional dishes typical of southern Vietnam will open on Friday in Can Tho, the largest city in the Mekong Delta region.

Nguyen Khanh Tung, director at Can Tho’s Center for Investment, Trade, and Expo Promotion, said the city has finished all preparations for the upcoming 5th Traditional Southern Cake Festival, which will run from April 15 to April 19 in Cai Khe Ward, Ninh Kieu District.

The festival will feature over 150 food stalls, 80 of which will be reserved for traditional cakes, 50 for regional specialties and handicrafts, and 20 for foreign participants.

The stalls will exhibit and sell around 100 different types of traditional Vietnamese cakes, 66 specialties, 20 traditional drinks, 20 kinds ofche (Vietnamese sweet soup), 15 types of noodles, among several others.

In addition, Can Tho City will also hold a conference to welcome suggestions for the growth of traditional Vietnamese cakes domestically and globally.

“This is a cultural and traditional event aimed at introducing and promoting traditional cakes made from rice, sticky rice, their powdered variations, and different types of vegetables typical of southern Vietnam to domestic and foreign visitors,” director Tung said.

According to Tung, the organizing committee has invited 20 artisans from Can Tho City and other Mekong Delta provinces to show off their cooking skills through making a variety of different cakes during the festival.

The last Traditional Southern Cake Festival, which took place in Can Tho from April 27 to May 1, 2015, attracted over 160,000 visitors and generated more than VND1.8 billion (US$80,400) in revenue.
